Meet Joannes Figueroa, CTD’s Volunteer of the Month!

October 11, 2024 by Reid Russom

Each month, Code the Dream celebrates a volunteer who has made a unique contribution to our community. This month, we’re excited to celebrate Joannes Figueroa, who has volunteered as both a React class mentor and Full Stack Practicum Lead.

Tell us about yourself!

Hello, I’m Joannes. When I’m not in front of my computer, you’ll usually find me immersed in one of my many hobbies. They’re a creative outlet for me—a way to express and learn about myself. In a way, it’s not so different from programming. I started coding because it was fun, but as I got deeper into it, I realized it’s also a form of self-expression. The whole process can reveal how you handle challenges and pressure.

Right now, I’m freelancing while looking for a more permanent role. That’s one of the things I love about coding—if you’ve got an idea and a computer, you’re ready to go.

Why did you get involved with Code the Dream?

After graduating from my bootcamp, I was job-ready but there was still so much information that flew by, and if you really want to master something, teach it – according to Feynman. Also, coming from a non-traditional background and attending a 16-week immersive bootcamp I quickly realized that coding is hard—especially when you’ve been out of school for over a decade.

Fortunately, the program I attended made learning accessible, thanks to some incredible instructors who could break down complex topics in a clear and concise way. But attending a full-time bootcamp comes with many constraints. I wanted to share what I’ve learned because I see so many opportunities in pursuing a career in programming—without the limitations and barriers of a full-time bootcamp.

What has been meaningful about your experience with Code the Dream?

All the ‘aha!’ moments and the progress I see in all the students.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Coding is hard, but if you embrace the challenge and appreciate the difficulty, you’ll realize it’s just part of the process. Remember, you will think of something and keep learning bit by bit—it’s all about steady progress.

Several students shared about why they appreciate Joannes:

My mentor Joannes is really good at getting me out of my comfort zone. His mentoring style is something I feel I was missing all along. He always asks the right questions and really makes you work for the answers. His prompt and detailed responses, long hours of mentor sessions, big window of availability really illustrates how dedicated this person is about coaching/mentoring and coding in general. I am just so glad to have him in this class.

— Aysa, React.js student

Joannes Figueroa was awesome! We had a 1-on-1 session and he was patient and helped me with my project set-up, GitHub set-up, and Git questions. He gets two thumbs up!

— Javier, React.js student

My mentor throughout the course was Joannes. He helped me a lot with the promise constructor syntax, adding extra examples that were not part of the book. I doubt I could have completed the task without his help!

— Alevtina, React.js student

Thanks, Joannes, for your commitment to our community!
