Meet Mindy Smith, CTD’s Volunteer of the Month for November 2022!

November 16, 2022 by Alex Rodriguez

Each month, we highlight a volunteer who has made big contributions to the CTD community. This month’s volunteer has carved out her own special role and plays an important part in the behind-the-scenes administration of our classes. Mindy Smith, an occupational ergonomist, has been volunteering with Code the Dream since 2021. Each week, she helps with our classes by creating the mentor schedule and sign-up sheets. Mindy has also led several Skill-IT sessions for CTD Labs apprentices, where she has shared tips for desk setup and taking care of your body while working from home.

Mindy shared about her volunteer experience at Code the Dream:

Tell us a little about yourself.

“I’m an Occupational Ergonomist with a background in Industrial Engineering. I own a small consulting firm in Raleigh, NC called ErgoSmith Consulting. I have over 25 years of experience in ergonomics in office and industrial environments. My goal is to prevent work-related repetitive motion injuries such as back strain and carpal tunnel syndrome.”

Why did you get involved with Code the Dream?

I met Ramiro Rodriguez, one of the co-founders, many years ago. I saw that he had founded this great organization and I wanted to be involved in any way I could. Unfortunately, I am not a coder so I offered to provide administrative support and teach ergonomics seminars.

What has been meaningful about your experience with Code the Dream?

Coders spend a lot of time at their computer, and I enjoy helping people create healthier work environments. I have appreciated assisting behind the scenes and offering seminars. I love to talk about computer ergonomics and welcome any questions anytime!

Thanks, Mindy, for your commitment to Code the Dream!

The Holistic Software Engineer: Why A Non-Linear Path is the Future of Tech
In the rapidly changing world of technology, a lingering myth still circulates in HR offices and C-suites from a bygone era: the only path to becoming a world-class software engineer is a straight, uninterrupted line through a computer science degree to a traditional corporate tech company. We fundamentally disagree.
