We’re thrilled to have a dedicated community of volunteers who help us train the next generation of diverse tech leaders. Each month, we celebrate one volunteer who has made a special contribution to our community. Our volunteer of the month for March 2024 is Geo Sauer, a React class mentor.
Tell us about yourself!
My journey into tech has been the next step in a diverse work history that includes bronze statue fabrication and telecommunications infrastructure. All of these experiences have allowed me to explore my interests while also cementing the importance of hands-on mentorship. As an early career Frontend engineer currently engaged with startups in the health and education sectors, I bring a unique perspective to the table, blending blue-collar grit with technological innovation.
Why did you get involved with Code the Dream?
Mentorship, to me, is more than just a professional interaction—it’s a conduit for growth and empowerment. Having overcome numerous challenges in my own journey, I am deeply committed to giving back and making difficult processes easier for others. The mentor/mentee relationship embodies this commitment, offering a perfect avenue to impart knowledge, provide guidance, and inspire growth in others.
What has been meaningful about your experience with Code the Dream?
Embarking on my first mentorship role, I definitely struggled with self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Embracing these vulnerabilities opened doors to authentic communication with my mentees, fostering deep connections and shared learning experiences. Witnessing those ‘aha’ moments as concepts clicked into place, and guiding students through frustrating troubleshooting sessions that transformed into exciting breakthroughs, affirmed the profound impact of mentorship.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Reflecting on my own journey into tech, I believe mentorship opportunities like those offered by CTD are invaluable for bootcamp graduates. Such programs provide a solid foundation to reinforce basics, build confidence, and give back to the community in meaningful ways. With an incredible staff and a cohort of inspiring students, the prospect of contributing to the growth of others while continuing my own learning journey is immensely rewarding.
Several students shared about why they appreciate Geo:
“I have been really grateful to meet with Geo. He has been really great at walking me through the concepts that I am having a difficult time with, such as props, and providing additional code snippets to help in clarifying concepts.”Leonardo, React.js student
