Spero Justice Center was founded in 2022 by HLS ’04 classmate Kristen Nelson. Its mission is to eradicate unjust and extreme sentencing practices in Colorado, where almost 30 percent of the state prison population is serving life or virtual life (40+ year) sentences.
In the first year of its existence, SJC secured the release of seven individuals serving virtual life sentences, collectively shortening their sentences by 407 years and saving the State over $5 million in incarceration costs.
SJC is a Colorado nonprofit organization that is fiscally-sponsored by the HadaNou Collective, a 501c3 organization.

Code the Dream offers free training in software development to people from diverse, low-income backgrounds. In CTD Labs, students hone their skills by building apps that solve real problems — from criminal justice reform to improved access to healthcare and education. The ultimate aim of Code the Dream is a unique win-win, where students gain hands-on experience building tools that make the world a better place, and then use that experience to launch new careers with enormous opportunity for themselves, their families, and their communities.
Founded by Dan Rearick (HLS ’04), CTD’s award-winning model now serves students in 40 states.
