CTD Hackathon

Alejandra Rodriguez · Mar 25, 2019

On Saturday March 9th, high school students from Sampson County Schools Upward Bound participated in Code the Dream’s Hackathon in Durham, NC. Juan Perez, Michael Pineda, Erica Quintana, KeAusja Chestnutt, and Katie Luengas were selected for the Code the Dream Future Scholars Internship. Over the past two the months they built a website with Code the Dream for their organization, Sampson County Schools Upward Bound using Squarespace. During the Hackathon, these talented students spent several hours throughout the morning and afternoon building two more websites for nonprofits in Sampson County: Rotary Clinton Club and Kiwanis Club of Sampson County.

KeAusja, Juan & Katie building the Kiwanis Club of Sampson County website
Michael & Erica building the Rotary Clinton Club website

Rotary Clinton Club is a chapter of Rotary International and Kiwanis Club of Sampson County is chapter Kiwanis International. They learned how to design and style websites throughout the course of their internship. On the day of the Hackathon, they were able to build two websites from scratch in just a few hours! We are so proud of their hard work!

For our final question: Based on the ideas we’ve explored today, what ways do you plan to start (or continue) using technology to build a better future for everyone? How will you connect with your neighbors, your local businesses, and your local government? #CTDxTCE

Even with the ability to connect with people all across the world, digital communication still has its drawbacks, as described by @STurkle in her 2012 @TEDTalks entitled "Connected, but alone?" #CTDxTCE ted.com/talks/sherry_t…

I'm sure many of us have stories about building relationships over the Internet, whether it be through dating apps, gaming communities, activist groups, etc. Tell us about a connection you made using technology that you could not have made without it. #CTExTCE
