Meet Andres Alcocer, CTD’s Volunteer of the Month!

October 24, 2023 by Alex Rodriguez

This month, we are excited to celebrate our volunteer Andres Alcocer, a software engineer at insightsoftware.

Andres is a by-appointment mentor and reviewer in our Intro to Programming class. In this role, Andres is assigned to work with a small group of students. Each week, he provides feedback on their code assignments and holds 1:1 meetings with these students to address questions and assist with blockers. Students told us that Andres is a reliable and patient mentor who is always ready to help out.

Andres shared more about himself and his experience with Code the Dream:

Tell us about yourself.

I am currently working as a fullstack developer with InsightSoftware, a company based out of Raleigh, NC. I first got started with coding when I took an Intro to Programming with Java course at my local community college. I was amazed how with code we can create anything, our imagination is the limit!

How did you get involved with Code the Dream?

I got involved with Code the Dream because I firmly believe in its mission – helping those who lack the resources to get started in this field. As a first-generation college student and of immigrant parents, I know first-hand the hardships these students face, so I am always willing to help them in any way I can.

What has been meaningful about your experience with Code the Dream?

Being able to connect with the students at a personal level makes it easier to mentor them, so it results in them in always being motivated to complete assignments and keep the momentum going. This is what gives meaning to me as a volunteer, knowing I am doing part in this grand scheme at CTD.

Students told us why they appreciate Andres:

Andres goes above and beyond as a mentor. After our Zoom time ran out in our first meeting, Andres started a Slack huddle with me to make sure that I was able to finish my assignment. He is knowledgeable and excellent at explaining tough concepts.

Robert, Intro to Programming student

My mentor, Andres, has been really helpful, reliable, and patient with me! He is a great mentor. I will definitely keep scheduling sessions with him.

Jesus, Intro to Programming student

My mentor sessions with Andres have been great – he has helped me clarify doubts and corrected my mistakes with knowledge and kindness.

The Holistic Software Engineer: Why A Non-Linear Path is the Future of Tech
In the rapidly changing world of technology, a lingering myth still circulates in HR offices and C-suites from a bygone era: the only path to becoming a world-class software engineer is a straight, uninterrupted line through a computer science degree to a traditional corporate tech company. We fundamentally disagree.
