Code the Dream Hosts Online Idea Exchange on Gender Diversity in Tech

April 6, 2023 by Alex Rodriguez

Code the Dream hosted an online conversation on April 4, featuring an exchange of ideas about gender diversity in the tech field. The conversation, led by CTD co-Executive Director Daisy Magnus-Aryitey, included discussion about the economic impact of more inclusive tech industry, the importance of developing skills beyond the purely technical, and the importance of including the entire spectrum of gender diversity in the conversation about inclusivity, among other topics.

Magnus-Aryitey talked with Ayanna Lott-Pollard, Executive Director of Resilient Coders, and Hollins Gause, Head of Growth, Recruitment and Admissions at Marcy Lab School. Like CTD, Resilient Coders and Marcy Lab School offer free tech education to those from communities that are underrepresented in the field.

The transformational power of the kinds of high-paying jobs the tech field provides can “close generational wealth and opportunity gaps,” Gause said.

During an exchange about respecting all gender-diverse people, Lott-Pollard talked about instituting policies and procedures that “create a space where people have the autonomy and the freedom to be present in their work, to enjoy their work, and to enjoy the people that they work with.”

The live-streamed conversation was part of Code the Dream’s Gender Diversity in Tech Series.

The Holistic Software Engineer: Why A Non-Linear Path is the Future of Tech
In the rapidly changing world of technology, a lingering myth still circulates in HR offices and C-suites from a bygone era: the only path to becoming a world-class software engineer is a straight, uninterrupted line through a computer science degree to a traditional corporate tech company. We fundamentally disagree.
