Mariposa AR

MariposaAR 01
MariposaAR 02
MariposaAR 03

A new augmented reality app commissioned by Google Fiber and developed by Code the Dream allows visitors to share something of themselves while experiencing the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera-inspired murals in downtown Durham.

The murals are located on the 100 block of East Chapel Hill Street, on the side of the Durham Convention Center. Download the app and get more information below.

HOW TO USE THE APP

HOW TO USE THE APP

Find links to download the app from the Apple App store or Google Play store at www.mariposaAr.com.

Open the app and select Let’s Go AR from the app’s main menu.

  1. Stand directly in front of either one of the murals to begin your AR experience.
(You can walk from mural to mural without leaving the AR experience.)
  2. Be attentive to the traffic behind you! Be careful to stay on the sidewalk.
  3. Hold your phone up at the center of the mural.
  4. You’ll know the app is working when you can move your phone around to see new images.

Look for banners that you can click on to learn more about the artists. In the Butterfly mural, look for the 3D Globe or the Share Your Story banner to read immigration journeys from other mural visitors. Share your own story by filling out the short form that will appear after clicking on the banner.  See what happens to the butterflies when you click Bring Everyone Together.  In the Frida mural, look for the arched door frame and walk through the portal for a glimpse into a gallery at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

About the Murals

The murals were installed in the fall by the North Carolina Museum of Art to celebrate the museum’s Mexican Modernism exhibit which includes pieces by Kahlo and Rivera. The murals, entitled “I Am My Own Muse” and “Juchari Ziranhua / Nuestros Raices/ Our Roots” are the works of artists Cecilia Lueza and Cornelio Campos, respectively. Several groups helped with the completion of the murals, including students from the NCMA’s Teen Art Council, El Pueblo, and El Centro Hispano.

For our final question: Based on the ideas we’ve explored today, what ways do you plan to start (or continue) using technology to build a better future for everyone? How will you connect with your neighbors, your local businesses, and your local government? #CTDxTCE

Even with the ability to connect with people all across the world, digital communication still has its drawbacks, as described by @STurkle in her 2012 @TEDTalks entitled "Connected, but alone?" #CTDxTCE ted.com/talks/sherry_t…

I'm sure many of us have stories about building relationships over the Internet, whether it be through dating apps, gaming communities, activist groups, etc. Tell us about a connection you made using technology that you could not have made without it. #CTExTCE
