Code the Dream’s Volunteers of the Month — Spring 2022

Jacob Williams

Jacob volunteers as a mentor in our Ruby on Rails course as well as in the Practicum that follows the classes.

Jacob is very attentive to our students and knows how to get the best out of them. Many students have benefited from his mentoring, and he is a valued part of CTD!

Jacob is very knowledgeable, patient and helpful mentor.

Konstantin S, Ruby on Rails student

Jacob is an ideal educator. He helps push our students further by being supportive and inquisitive, encouraging students to reach beyond their comfort zones into more advanced material. Thank you, Jacob!

Mary Alice Moore, CTD Class Coordinator

Jacob is so very patient. In the times that I’ve hit roadblocks, he’s never failed to help me figure my way out of whatever corner I’ve coded myself into. Line by line.

Shy L, Ruby on Rails student

Kon Ham

Kon started as a student in Code the Dream classes in 2020 and quickly completed all the material ahead of schedule. Even while in class, Kon worked to help his fellow students, organizing additional learning sessions.

After getting a job as a developer, Kon hopped right back into CTD as a mentor in multiple classes, where he goes above and beyond to support our students. Thank you, Kon!

Kon cares about each of his students as the unique individuals they are. He has a deep appreciation for the struggles in their lives that have brought them to their current place in life and is the best and loudest cheerleader helping them forward as they work to achieve their dreams. Kon, we appreciate you!

Mary Alice Moore, Class Coordinator

Kon is amazing and motivating. He kept checking in with us and asking us what he could work on to be a better mentor. I really appreciate that!

Jennifer T., Intro to Programming Student

Kon always tries to be encouraging and empathetic to everyone’s situation. Always positive and goes above and beyond. Also, his last name is delicious.

Lawrence L., Ruby on Rails student

Kon is more than a mentor. He is a friend who stands on our side. He always responds promptly and I don’t feel uncomfortable asking his help and advice. Thank you Kon!

Inara, Intro to Programming Student

I really enjoy the atmosphere of Kon’s mentor sessions. He is a hard worker and he is honest.

Aster, Ruby on Rails Student

Diana Liao

Diana’s students appreciate her enthusiasm and passion for coding and supporting new developers.

Not only has Diana mentored in multiple CTD classes, she has also taken the initiative to create Feelings Friday, a group for new student developers to explore the challenges of learning to code and of getting started in the tech industry. Thank you, Diana!

Diana is a versatile and all-encompassing mentor with a huge heart. Not only is she great at mentoring on everything from the fundamentals to the advanced concepts, she also makes sure the students are able to share their frustrations and joys of learning to code in a safe space. Thank you, Diana, for being such a great mentor and friend to us all!

Mary Alice Moore, Class Coordinator

Diana has such authentic energy that she’s brought to her mentorship of our cohort. She is a thoughtful mentor and has given me detailed feedback on tricky code. She also spearheaded a critical part of this work: “Feelings Friday”, a dedicated time to talk about the human side of what we’re struggling with, and what’s giving us joy as we learn this whole new language of coding, and that means the world to me!

Brendan O’Connor, Intro to Programming Student

Diana reflected on her experience with Code the Dream:

Not only does Code the Dream’s mission align with my values, I know what it’s like to go through a coding bootcamp!

It’s been great meeting so many driven people. Everyone at CTD, staff and volunteers alike, seems to care about the students almost to a fault. Every student has an admirable commitment to learn and make a big change in their life.

I’m so glad I’ve found a place where I can make a meaningful and immediate contribution!

@techhanh Thanks for joining us, Hanh! We will continue to explore topics around tech and civic engagement throughout August and September so stay tuned. 🤗

For our final question: Based on the ideas we’ve explored today, what ways do you plan to start (or continue) using technology to build a better future for everyone? How will you connect with your neighbors, your local businesses, and your local government? #CTDxTCE

Even with the ability to connect with people all across the world, digital communication still has its drawbacks, as described by @STurkle in her 2012 @TEDTalks entitled "Connected, but alone?" #CTDxTCE ted.com/talks/sherry_t…

I'm sure many of us have stories about building relationships over the Internet, whether it be through dating apps, gaming communities, activist groups, etc. Tell us about a connection you made using technology that you could not have made without it. #CTExTCE
